As previously announced by the Newport Elks, three seniors from Newport High School and two from Waldport High School won a total of $4,700 in scholarship assistance for their first year at college. In addition to those awards, the Lodge also provides an annual Vocational Scholarship. This year, Holly Bissell, another senior from Waldport High School, won the competition for that award. Worth $600, this scholarship is presented in memory of the late Jerry Williams who was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Newport Elks Lodge.
On May 17th, prior to the regular weekly Lodge Meeting, Holly, accompanied by family and friends, was welcomed into the Lodge Room by officers and members to receive her award. Holly thanked the Lodge for the scholarship and talked about her career plans. Holly will be attending Oregon Coast Community College. After taking courses for her Associates Degree, Holly will enroll in the Nursing Program with the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse. The Newport Elks are pleased to be able to support Holly in this effort.
The Newport Elks Lodge encourages students at these high schools to check with their schools about the application process for next year's scholarship competition. Beyond the funds provided directly by the Newport Elks for the previously announced scholarships, local lodge winners also compete at the district level against winners from Elks Lodges in Astoria, St. Helens, Seaside, Tillamook, Oceanlake, Toledo and Florence. Those winners then compete at the state level and may subsequently qualify for national awards.
